BUSAN, SOUTH KOREA / RankWire.AI / – South Korea has begun its first container ship trial through the Arctic to Europe. The 2,758-TEU PanStar Acro left Busan New Port at about 9 p.m. on August 22. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries confirmed the departure and published the voyage schedule. The ship will use the Northern Sea Route before calling at three European ports. The 45-day round trip is scheduled to end in Busan on October 5.
PanStar Line Dot Com operates the vessel, which is carrying 837 TEU during the Arctic shipping trial. About 737 TEU consists of commercial cargo, including chemical products, used vehicles and automotive parts. The load also includes 100 empty containers. The vessel is scheduled to enter Arctic waters around August 30 and complete that section around September 7. Officials estimate the Arctic portion of the voyage at about 6,400 kilometers.
The ship will call at Felixstowe in the United Kingdom on September 9, according to the official schedule. Rotterdam in the Netherlands follows on September 11, with Gdansk in Poland scheduled for September 15. The vessel will then return to South Korea through the same Arctic route. The Busan-to-Rotterdam distance on the planned route measures about 13,000 kilometers. The trial will gather operating data throughout the voyage.
Trial carries commercial cargo to Europe
The captain and navigation officers completed specialized training for operations in polar waters before the departure. An experienced polar navigator who has served aboard South Korea’s Araon icebreaking research vessel joined as chief officer. Preparations also covered insurance, emergency procedures and administrative requirements for the voyage. Authorities completed consultations with relevant countries and organizations before departure. A 24-hour communication system will keep the ship connected during the Arctic passage.
The voyage marks South Korea’s first trial of the Northern Sea Route with a container ship. Korean shipping companies previously operated other vessel types on Arctic routes, including bulk carriers and tankers. However, this is the first such Korean Arctic operation since 2016. The ship is transporting actual commercial cargo rather than conducting an empty demonstration voyage. The trial covers technical, environmental and commercial data linked to container transport through Arctic waters.
Voyage gathers operating data on northern route
Preparations for the voyage began earlier in 2026 through a public-private council focused on Arctic shipping. Organizers selected the participating carrier through a public competition in May. Subsequent work covered vessel readiness, cargo arrangements, crew composition, insurance and emergency response procedures. The parties also completed administrative steps required for international navigation. These preparations preceded the August departure from Busan and the planned passage through the northern waters above Russia.
The government classifies the journey as a trial operation rather than a regular container service. During the round trip, officials will collect figures on sailing distance, travel time, fuel consumption and operating expenses. The project will also measure cargo demand and other practical requirements linked to container transport. Its scheduled European calls provide commercial cargo movements alongside the navigation test. PanStar Acro is due back at Busan New Port around October 5, completing the planned 45-day voyage.
