    European Union provides €60 million aid for DRC crisis response

    The European Commission has announced a €60 million humanitarian aid package for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in 2025. This initiative aims to address the urgent needs of communities displaced or affected by ongoing conflict and recent epidemics, particularly in the country’s eastern regions. In a statement issued on January 28, the Commission highlighted the growing humanitarian crisis in and around Goma, where escalating violence has led to significant displacement.

    The European Union (EU) reaffirmed its commitment to providing emergency assistance, emphasizing the importance of responding swiftly to alleviate the suffering of vulnerable populations. This aid package also seeks to mitigate the effects of recent epidemics that have further strained the region’s fragile healthcare systems.

    Eastern DRC has long been plagued by instability, driven by armed group activities and inter-communal violence. The humanitarian situation has worsened in recent months, with thousands of families forced to flee their homes, many seeking refuge in makeshift camps near Goma. The EU’s announcement follows reports from international agencies warning of deteriorating living conditions and increasing malnutrition rates among displaced populations.
